For In a furnished flat
in Cairo, Maha Maamoun works with the issues of security and
insecurity and how they manifest themselves within the household.
Maamoun addresses the individual’s attempts to bridge feelings
of insecurity through the acquisition, accumulation, and display of
products, positions, and convictions which ultimately result in a
false sense of material, spiritual or psychological security. Central
to this sense of security is the impulse to keep count, encompass,
accumulate, contain and control which manifests itself within a bedroom
in the flat.
Maha Maamoun (1972) lives and works in Cairo. She has an M.A. in Middle
Eastern History from American University in Cairo and has been working
as a black and white darkroom supervisor since 1994. Her recent exhibitions
include PhotoCairo at the Townhouse Gallery, Cairo, Egypt
(2003), 5ème Rencontre de la Photographie Africaine,
Bamako, Mali (2003), Going Places: a Project for Public Buses,
